Mixed Nuts

Nuts are a valuable source of omega-3, fibre, vitamin E, antioxidants and healthy fats; they are also associated with additional health benefits, particularly for the heart. A new study from Maastricht University has found that consuming nuts and peanuts (which are actually a legume), can help in the prevention of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The study asserts that half a handful of peanuts or nuts each day – around 15 grams – may in fact reduce the risk of dying from these diseases.

Researchers evaluated data drawn from a group of men and women between the ages of 55 and 69 who were asked how often they consumed peanuts and nuts, and in what quantities. The results revealed that participants who consumed half a handful of nuts or peanuts daily were at a lower risk of death from respiratory, heart and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as cancer and diabetes.

It was found that consuming more than 15 grams of nuts or peanuts, the equivalent to half a handful, did not lead to a further reduction in cancer or respiratory mortality. It is also significant to note that the benefits of nuts extend beyond the physical, as they also protect cognitive functioning in older adults.
